Making a Career Change? You’re not starting from scratch!

Making a career change is daunting. You're right to question your thinking from every angle. Is it the right time to make this change for yourself and/or for your family?  Are you financial positioned to make this change? What education/training would you need to begin in this career?  How long would it take to get "up and running" in this new career? What would success look like in this new career?

It may feel like you're starting from zero.  However, I am slowly starting to see that you never really start from scratch as a career changer. There is so much knowledge from all those years of previous work experience. When you sense a calling to make a dramatic change in life, you have to follow your gut, and trust that there's a plan.

Why a Career Change Might be Right for You

There are many reasons why you might decide to make a career change. Maybe you're not fulfilled in your current role. Maybe you're looking for more challenge or more money. Or maybe you've just realized that your true passion lies elsewhere. Whatever the reason, if you're considering a career change, it's important to do your research and make sure it's the right decision for you.

Here are a few tips for making the transition:

1) Do your research: Learning about your new industry will help you feel more prepared and confident as you start your job search.

  • Search for educational podcasts targeted to individuals who work in your desired field.

  • Search for podcasts by individuals who work in your desired field, targeting your potential clients.

  • Search for YouTube videos of other individuals who work in your desired field.

  • Get a feel for the competitive landscape and how your target clients are being approached by others.

2) Network: Connecting with people who work in your desired field is a great way to learn about open positions and get your foot in the door.

3) Be patient: It might take some time to find the perfect role or to complete the required re-tooling, but don't give up! Keep searching and eventually you'll get there.

4) Be flexible: Be open to trying new things and learning new skills. A willingness to adapt will help you succeed in any career change.

5) Stay positive: Making a career change can be challenging, but it's also an amazing opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Embrace the challenge and believe in yourself—you can do it!

A career change can be scary, but it doesn't have to be daunting! Remember that you bring valuable skills and knowledge with you from previous roles, and don't be afraid to network or try new things as you embark on this exciting journey. With hard work and determination, anything is possible!
